Union Academy grad Shanyder Borgelin promoted to Inter Miami first team
Another Philadelphia Union Academy grad has risen to the top flight in U.S. Soccer.
Inter Miami announced this week that 21-year-old forward Shanyder Borgelin has been promoted to the first team. The YSC Academy grad joined Inter Miami II last year after his contract with Philadelphia Union II expired. The Florida native was recruited to play in the Union Academy in 2017.
He joins Inter Miami goalkeeper CJ dos Santos as former Union Academy prospects on the first team roster.
“When I first heard that I was getting promoted to the First Team it was a surreal moment for me and my family,” Borgelin was quoted saying in an article on the Inter Miami website. “My agents called me and told me everything was worked out. Right then and there I kind of just broke down and cried because since I was a kid I wanted to be in this position and be able to play at the highest level. It’s been a long wait, but I’m just happy to be living this moment right now.”
The Haitian international had a breakout season in MLS Next Pro last season, scoring 14 goals in 23 games. He and fellow YSC Academy grad Sebastian Elney both made their senior national team debuts in a match against Bahrain in September 2021.
