Philadelphia Union’s Harriel and McGlynn Eye Senior USMNT Debuts in 2024 Friendly Against Slovenia
The United States Men’s National Team is set to kick off its 2024 campaign with a match against Slovenia on Saturday afternoon in Texas. This game, the first for the team in 2024, also marks the second time the senior squad will compete in a modern era United Soccer League stadium, with around 9,000 fans expected at Toyota Field.
The move to play in the USL Stadium is part of US Soccer’s broader strategy to expand the sports footprint in the United States, a timely initiative as the 2026 World Cup approaches, which is being hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Efforts are also underway in collaboration with Mexico to bid for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in North America.
For Philadelphia Union supporters, this match is particularly noteworthy as Nathan Harriel and Jack McGlynn can make their senior debut with the USMNT. Stay tuned to Philadelphia Soccer Now’s social media for updates and to find out if the Union stars earn their first caps.
The January roster is filled with Major League Soccer talent, including three players each from the Columbus Crew and FC Cincinnati. The Philadelphia Union, FC Dallas, and New England Revolution are each contributing two players to the squad. Other MLS teams, including Atlanta United, Inter Miami, LAFC, Nashville SC, New York City FC, New York Red Bulls, Orlando City, Real Salt Lake, St. Louis City, Seattle Sounders, and Vancouver Whitecaps, have one player each called up.
Saturday’s friendly with Slovenia will be the first encounter on US soil between the two teams, with the USMNT holding a 1-0-1 all-time record against the European nation. This record includes the unforgettable 2-2 draw at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The USMNT has a significant year ahead, aiming for a third consecutive Concacaf Nations League title, the Copa America crown, and a medal at the 2024 Olympic Games—the first Olympic participation since 2008.
Slovenia, ranked 54th in FIFA’s latest rankings, is preparing for the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament this summer. The Slovenian squad features Mitja Ilenic, the right back from MLS’s NYCFC.
