Six local girls teams still alive in Class 4A state tournament; Northeast boys still in, Conestoga out
Six of the eight girls teams left in the PIAA Class 4A state tournament are local from Philadelphia, guaranteeing at least one team from the area will be playing for a state title this year.
Last year, Pennridge beat Conestoga in the final.
Conestoga is among the six teeams from District 1 and District 12 that advanced to the second round. They will travel to Chambersburg to play Seneca Valley on Saturday.
Garnet Valley plays Downingtown West at 1 p.m. Saturday at West Chester Rustin, Central Bucks East plays Archbishop Carroll at Spring-Ford at 11 a.m. and Lower Merion travels to Millersville to take on Central Dauphin, which beat Pennridge in the 2022 state final.
Northeast High School continues to be the story of the tournament so far on the Class 4A boys side. They beat Philadelphia Catholic League champions La Salle College in the District 12 final and followed that up with a penalty shootout victory over 2023 state finalist Central Bucks South. They’ll face Parkland at Pennridge High School on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Conestoga, the 2023 state champions were also knocked out of the first round with a 3-2 defeat to Warwick.
West Chester Henderson advanced to the second round with a 1-0 win over Wilson in a game decided by an early own goal. The 23-0 Warriors now have to beat league rivals Great Valley for a third time. They beat them 3-0 in league play and 4-0 in the District 1 semifinal.
Class 3A
West Chester Rustin continued their historic season with a 3-0 win over Manheim Central at home on Tuesday night. Manheim Central held the District 1 champs scoreless in the first half but Ava Pascarella scored just after the half and added a penalty kick after Natalie Duffie doubled the lead to round out the secoring in a 3-0 win.
Rustin will next travel to Hummelstown to take on Shikellamy on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Strath Haven plays Cocalico at Spring-Ford at 1 p.m. with a possible rematch of the District 1 final looming in the next round.
Radnor boys advanced to the second round with a 3-0 win over Kennard Dale at home Tuesday night to set up a meeting with Archbishop Ryan at Norristown at noon on Saturday. Ryan outlasted Cocalico on penalties to advance.
Class 2A
Faith Christian improved to 19-0 with a 2-1 win at Lancaster Catholic on Tuesday night. A first half red card on Lancaster Catholic put Faith up a man but it was anything but an easy result. They’ll now face 2022 state champions Northwest Lehigh at Blue Mountain at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Class A
Dock Mennonite is the only local state champion from last year still alive and the only local team in Class A after Calvary Christian boys were knocked out on Tuesday night.
Dock beat Masterman 6-0 to set up a meeting with Camp Hill at Governor Mifflin HS on Saturday at 10 a.m.
