Philadelphia Union Academy trio called up for FIFA U-17 World Cup qualifiers

Three Philadelphia Union Academy teammates will be part of the U.S. Under-17 team aiming to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in November in Qatar.

Left back Jordan Griffin, midfielder Kellan LeBlanc and forward Jamir Johnson are all part of the 20-player roster called in by head coach Gonzalo Seagares. Former Philadelphia Union Academy defender Pedro Guimaraes is also part of the team.

The U.S. will play U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Kitts and Navis and Cuba in Group F play from Feb. 10-15 in Costa Rica. Eight teams will qualify for the 48-team FIFA U-17 World Cup.

The U.S. was drawn into Group F and kicks off its qualifying campaign against the U.S. Virgin Islands on Monday, Feb. 10, faces St. Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday, Feb. 12 and finishes the competition against Cuba on Saturday, Feb. 15. All three of the USA’s group stage matches kick off at 8 p.m. ET, with the first two games at the Estadio Nacional in San Jose and the third at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela. The competition will be broadcast on FOX Sports platforms with the final broadcast schedule to be confirmed.

The new Concacaf U-17 Qualifiers feature 35 teams divided into eight groups (five of four teams, three of five teams) played across six different countries. No knockout stage will be contested. Each of the eight group winners will punch its ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.
