Union take down FC Cincinnati on the road, stay on top of shield race
The Philadelphia Union’s 1-0 win over FC Cincinnati on Saturday was a big one. Not only did they grab three points on the road, but they also maintained their spot at the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings. With just a few matches left in the season, every result matters, and this one showed the Union is ready to battle for a first-place finish. Here are a few points from the match, as well as things to look forward to as the playoffs get closer.
Wagner Steps Up
Kai Wagner was one of the best players on the field against Cincinnati. He is known for his crossing and attacking threat, but on Saturday, he showed defensive strength. Wagner shut down his side of the field and set the tone for the whole team. His work gave the Union confidence that they could grab a tough away win. Oftentimes, Wagner plays very high and wide, which makes it hard to track back. Against Cincinnati, though, he gave more defensive support, and it shut down any threat coming from his side. That effort gave the Union a huge boost in a tight contest.
The Goalkeeper Question
Andrew Rick also came up big against Cincinnati. With Andre Blake still missing, Rick stepped in and delivered several key saves that earned him Player of the Match honors. His performance gave the backline confidence in a tough environment. Still, fans know there is some uncertainty. Mistakes can happen, like the near-post free-kick goal he allowed to Messi earlier this season. A reliable keeper is critical in the playoffs, and while Rick has handled himself well, the position remains something to watch moving forward.
Shutting Down Evander and Future Tests
Another positive from the match was how well the Union limited Evander, one of the league’s most dangerous players. For long stretches, he was invisible, which is a great sign with the playoffs around the corner. The Union will face even more star attackers like Messi, Mukhtar, Forsberg, Diego Rossi, and Luis Suarez. The defensive discipline shown in Cincinnati will need to continue if they want to make a deep run.
Illoski vs. Vassilev: Two Different Options
Looking ahead, Milan Iloski has changed the way this team attacks. His creativity makes defenders worry about more than just the strikers, and that extra threat has opened up space across the front line. He looks like the piece the Union were missing for the postseason push.
Indiana Vassilev, on the other hand, offers a different type of value. He is not flashy but can step in wherever the team needs him. In knockout games where flexibility matters, his ability to come off the bench and plug holes could be a game-changer.
Results Against the East’s Best
Even with the win at Cincinnati, the Union’s record against the top of the East is mixed. They have beaten Cincy twice, but one of those games was early in the year, and this one came with Cincy missing Miles Robinson and Yuya Kubo. Against other contenders, they have lost twice to Nashville, failed to beat Columbus, and tied and lost to Miami. The Union can win big games, but they have not always shown consistency against the strongest sides. Nashville, in particular, looks like the toughest matchup because they play such a similar style. On top of giving practically nothing away, they also have Sam Surridge, who has been even more dangerous than Tai Baribo. With their playstyles being so similar, I am sure the Union will be hoping for a different opponent when the time comes.
