Maurice Edu underwent surgery to repair a sport hernia and will miss the final two games of the Philadelphia Union’s season. With this surgery out of the way, Edu will have a long off-season to get healthy and is expected to be ready for the 2016 pre-season.

With the US Open Cup final out of the way, it seems that the Union medical staff saw it necessary to shut the defender down for the season – especially with no meaningful games left to play. Edu was clearly in a race to get fit ahead of the final and though he played the entire match, he looked noticeably hobbled late in the game and during the penalty shoot-out. Reports ahead of the match had indicated Edu was suffering from a partially torn groin, but it appears a sports hernia was also nagging the captain.

The revelation of this additional injury to Edu will certainly fuel the debate that has already been swirling around his performance in the Open Cup final and Jim Curtin decision to keep him in the game late.
