La Salle wins overtime thriller; Delaware improves to 4-0
Explorers twice came back to set up overtime win; Blue Hens keep rolling
New head coach Rob Irvine and La Salle are off to the program’s best start since 2012 after a thrilling comeback victory over Saint Peter’s in Jersey City on Wednesday.
After a scoreless first half, the Explorers (3-1-0) took the lead in the 59th minute on a goal from Johnny Ciarlante, but twice fell behind – first after conceding a pair of goals three minutes apart, and again in the 86th minute when Brandon Goncalves’ second of the match put the Peacocks in front.
Joe Bianco’s goal with time running out sent the match to overtime, where Conor Nichols won it just over four minutes in. Coleman Kennedy scored an equalizer for the Explorers in the 78th minute and Matt Robinson continued his good form with assists on three of the four goals.
The four goals were the most by a La Salle team since October 31, 2014 when they beat St. Bonaventure 5-0, but it could have been more. La Salle fired off 21 shots in the game, 18 on goal. Saint Peter’s goalkeeper Jamie Cleland made 14 saves.
Delaware beats Iona for fourth straight win
A pair of second half goals kept Delaware rolling in a 2-0 win over Iona on Wednesday night.
The No. 22 ranked Blue Hens picked up their fourth straight win and fourth straight shutout to start the season behind freshman Fede Prieto’s first career goal and senior Jaime Martinez.
West Chester native Todd Morton only had to make one save to record his fourth clean sheet of the season and seniors Guillermo Delgado and Dani Laguna picked up their second assists of the year.
The four straight shutouts mark a first since 1974 for the program.
