Michael Farfan announces retirement

Michael Farfan is calling it a career. The 28 year old announced his retirement via a Facebook post yesterday, ending a career that spanned a decade across two countries.

By the time Farfan was drafted by the Philadelphia Union in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, he had already been playing soccer with teams in the PDL since 2006 in his native Southern California as well as a stint with the Ogden (Utah) Outlaws. Farfan also picked up 13 caps with the United States U17 team. He spent three seasons with the Philadelphia Union, playing alongside of his twin brother Gabriel for most of his stint with the club. Before the 2014 season, Michael was sold to Liga MX’s Cruz Azul. Farfan made one appearance for Cruz Azul, coming on in relief and scoring a stoppage-time goal to salvage a draw against Pachuca.

Farfan returned to MLS in 2015, this time with D.C. United where he made 17 appearances for the Black and Red. Last year, he was picked up by the Seattle Sounders, making one appearance for them and seven appearances for their USL affiliate.

Farfan thanked his dad, mom, brother Gabriel, and his wife Alazne for their support during his career. He ended his post by saying “With no regrets, I’m ready to start a new chapter in my life and that is to travel the world with my wife for a year starting with a one way ticket Bangkok, Thailand.”
