Orlando City 2, Philadelphia Union 1: Instant recap and player ratings survey

The Philadelphia Union suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday night, falling to Orlando City SC, 2-1.

The away side nearly escaped a first half that saw OCSC control every facet of the game, but Cyle Larin finally managed to translate his team’s dominance to the scoreboard. The third-year forward opened up the scoring in the 39th minute, when connected with Carlos Rivas’s cross from point-blank range.

CJ Sapong evened up the score early in the second half. Sapong, starting in place of the injured Jay Simpson, powerfully headed home a flick from Alejandro Bedoya just seven minutes after the break.

Orlando regained the lead 20 minutes later, with Rivas and Larin’s partnership bearing fruit once more. A cheeky flick from Rivas found a streaking Larin, who stormed past the Union back line and calmly picked his spot.

The Union did have opportunities to get a point out of the encounter, most notably in second-half stoppage time. Just moments before the referee blew for full time, Ilsinho struck the post and Bedoya saw his header denied heroically by Joe Bendik.

With next week’s international break, the Union will have to wait until April 1st to avenge their first loss of 2017. They’ll travel to RFK to take on their old friends, D.C. United.
