Two Union Players Highlight MLS TOTW
Onyewu’s big night gets better and Haris has a coming out party
After a performance worthy of tearing down what little was left of RFK stadium, the Philadelphia Union get some deserved recognition in this week’s MLS Team of the Week. Following in the footsteps of CJ Sapong and Andre Blake, Haris Medunjanin and Oguchi Onyewu (!!!) have made it into the best XI for the week.
Haris had a screamer of a goal on a Chris Pontius set up to open his MLS account in a tense first half, before he had a ridiculous fake to freeze up D.C. United’s defense for Fafa Picault’s first goal in MLS play as well. The videos are below, and you should definitely have another look if you haven’t already. His goal first and the sweet assist for Fafa below that.
Obviously a sweet strike from Picault, but that stepover by Medunjanin was sharp as well.
Let’s talk about Oguchi Onyewu. In what was a move that had just about everyone scratching their heads back in February, the veteran center back has shown what he can bring to the table. Pairing well with Jack Elliot in what might be the tallest back line in MLS history, Oguchi capped off a homecoming/birthday celebration in DC with a beautiful header to give the U a two goal advantage. Same deal as Haris, I’ll embed the goal and then below that will be an excerpt from Gooch’s post game interview, which is definitely worth the minute and some change it takes to listen to it.
Four players in the last two Team of the Week lineups and it almost almost feels like the Union might be good or something? Let us know in the comments what you thought of these TOTW performances as well as if there was any goal better than Fabian Herber’s first touch goalazo this week. Congratulations to both Haris and Oguchi, and a happy belated birthday to the big man in the middle as well!
