Local Soccer Notebook: 9/23/17

C.J. dos Santos on the U.S. U17 World Cup roster; Bearfight FC opens first season in USL of PA & more

John Hackworth unveiled his United States U17 roster for the World Cup in India this week and while there aren’t any current Philadelphia Union players on the team, former Union Academy goalkeeper and Philadelphia native C.J. dos Santos is on the roster.

Dos Santos signed a professional contract with Benfica in Portugal in August 2016. He is one of three goalkeepers on the roster, which includes Sockers FC keeper Alex Budnik and Atlanta United FC Academy goalkeeper Justin Garces.

The United States opens group play against host India on October 6 and plays Ghana on October 9 and Colombia on October 12.

In other local soccer news over the past week:

Malvern native and Penn Fusion/Episcopal Academy alum Quinn Dudek was the Atlantic 10 co-Rookie of the Week after scoring his first career goal and adding an assist for Davidson.

Penn freshman Jake Kohlbrenner was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week after scoring his first career goal against SIU Edwardsville.

Harrisburg City Islanders teammate Rapopa Mensah and Brandon Miller both made the ULS Team of the Week. Joining them was former City Islander Jose Barril while La Salle grad Joe Farrell (Blue Bell, Pa.) and former Philadelphia Union midfielder Corben Bone were honorable mentions.

Andre Blake was on the MLS Team of the Week.

Millersville moved into the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 for Division 2 this week, coming in No. 15 after a 4-0-1 start.

Lycoming moved up two spots to fourth, Messiah up six spots to No. 10 in the DIII poll while Haverford fell 15 spots to 23rd while Rowan University and Gettysburg both received votes.

Kutztown is third on the women’s side for DII while The College of New Jersey is third in DIII, followed by Swarthmore at No. 6 and Messiah 12th

The Ridley High School boys soccer team is donating the proceeds from their annual Fun Night on September 29 to hurricane relief funds in Texas and Florida.

Bearfight FC lost their first match in the Major II division of the United Soccer League of Pennsylvania on Sunday 4-3 to West Chester Predators II.

Delaware Turf Sports Complex in Frederica, Delaware will play host to the NCAA youth soccer showcase in conjunction with the College Cup at Talen Energy Stadium December 8-10.

West Chester United shared a great reminder for players, parents and coaches.
