Eduardo Coudet Waived By The Union

The Philadelphia Union announced Monday that they have waived 36-year-old Argentinian midfielder Eduardo Coudet.

Coudet joined the team as a trialist last summer and debuted for the club in a friendly match against Celtic FC. After also appearing in the friendly against Manchester United, he signed a contract with the club and went on to start in nine games for Philadelphia, usually playing as a holding midfielder. "Chacho" logged 631 minutes for the Union.

An influx of international players (Faryd Mondragon, Carlos Valdes) and a large salary ($180,000 base, $185,000 in total compensation) may have contributed to Coudet’s release, along with the fact that the Union has 12 players under contract that can be considered midfielders.

The Argentine boasts an impressive resume of former clubs, including Celta de Vigo in Spain, San Luis in Mexico, and River Plate in his native country.

Coach Peter Nowak continues to tweak his roster ahead of the season opener on March 19 in Houston. Aside from Coudet, the team has also waived defender Cristian Arrieta, midfielder Toni Stahl, and goalkeeper Brad Knighton during this offseason.
