Former Union Midfielder Fred Traded From Revolution to DC United For 2013 MLS SuperDraft Second Rounder

DC United traded its natural 2013 MLS SuperDraft second round pick to the New England Revolution for the rights to midfielder Fred. As of now he has yet to sign with the team but United now owns his MLS rights. United’s team Twitter account tweeted a picture of Fred signing a contract with the team.

Fred (whose full name is Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva) was a member of the Philadelphia Union for its inaugural 2010 MLS season. He was acquired by the Revolution in the 2010 MLS Re-Entry Draft. The Revolution were unable to reach an agreement with the Brazilian on a new contract. Per Re-Entry Draft rules the Revolution retained Fred's MLS rights.

After not coming to terms with the Revolution, Fred had begun to think of returning to Australia. In 2007, prior to coming to MLS, the 31-year-old Fred starred in 2006-2007 for the Australian A-League's Melbourne Victory. In 2008 Fred came to the United States and played for United until coming to the Union in the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft.
