Veljko Paunovic is returning to the MLS, but he will not be playing on the field (sadly), and he is not returning to the Philadelphia Union. The Chicago Fire confirmed this morning that the ex-Union and Atletico Madrid midfielder will be the new head coach for the 2016 season. Paunovic retired after his 2011 season with the Philadelphia Union and has since coached the Serbian U18, U19, and U20 National teams, leading Serbia to a U-20 World Cup championship and placing third in the 2014 UEFA U-19 European Championships. The Fire’s general manager Nelson Rodriguez was delighted to have Paunovic join, saying “In the face of stiff competition from other global soccer clubs, we are extremely fortunate to have secured our first choice, Veljko Paunovic, as our head coach. We conducted a thorough search process and, over its cource, Pauno consistently graded highest across all our desired characteristics. He is a champion, teacher of the game and man of great principle and integrity.” After the season the Fire had, a new coach was expected, and they are extremely fortunate to have such a great coach. We wish the best of luck to Paunovic as he begins his time with the Chicago Fire!
