The season opener in Frisco, Texas didn’t produce goals or a clean sheet but defender Mark McKenzie did impress enough to finish with the highest average rating in our first community player ratings poll of the season.

McKenzie finished with a 3.15 average rating from the voters, followed by Andre Blake — who made a fine first half save to keep the game scoreless — at 3.09 and captain Alejandro Bedoya at 3.04.

As is typical in games the Union lose, you can read some frustration coming through in the ratings, particularly with forward Sergio Santos who received an even 2.00 average rating and head coach Jim Curtin, who scored a 2.40. Super sub Ilsinho was second to last with a 2.33 average rating.

Only two players topped the player ratings poll last season with a lower average rating than McKenzie. Ilsinho had the highest rating with a 2.83 in a 4-0 loss in Montreal last July and Jack Elliott topped the poll with a 3.14 rating in the 2-0 loss in Chicago three weeks later.
