Aaronson, McKenzie still with Philadelphia Union after close of transfer window
Aaronson’s deal to join RB Salzburg in January is reportedly done while speculation continues about a McKenzie move to Celtic
The European transfer window closed on Monday with plenty of news and excitement, but none immediately impacting the Philadelphia Union.
Tom Bogert of MLSSoccer.com reported that a deal that will send Brenden Aaronson to RB Salzburg in Austria in January has been finalized. His report didn’t include any details about what the fee will be but it confirmed a previous report that Aaronson will play out the remainder of the 2020 campaign with his hometown club.
That’s good news for the Union as they grind their way through the remainder of their regular season schedule playing eight games over the next month.
Defender Mark McKenzie appears to be staying put as well as the transfer window closed without news about him leaving the club (for now).
McKenzie did cause a bit of a stir in Scotland on Monday afternoon when he sent a tweet out about patience with an hour glass. The speculation that he was signing with Celtic on deadline day caused enough of a stir to get his Wikipedia page briefly changed to say he was a defender for Celtic.
The Scottish Premier League club reportedly remains keen on the 21-year-old but like Aaronson a move could be pending in the January window.
McKenzie and Aaronson staying through the end of the campaign and Jose Martinez not being released for international duty — whatever that says about the club for not releasing him — means barring injury the Union will have their squad intact to make a push for the team’s first trophy.
It would be a heckuva send off if Aaronson and McKenzie both leave in the January window if they won a Supporters Shield and/or an MLS Cup, wouldn’t it?
