Rate the U: Three more points over New England

Because MLS loves games between the Philadelphia Union and New England Revolution, the two teams met again on Monday night in Foxborough and it was the Union yet again getting the better of the Revs.

Save for a really ugly own goal, the Revs didn’t make it easy for the Union and probably deserved a point out of the match. Andre Blake made seven saves and was the main reason the Union left with all three points after denying Lee Nguyen’s fabulously taken free kick with a diving stop to keep it out of the upper 90.

Anthony Fontana ended the night with the game-winner on an audacious chip of Matt Turner. It was his fourth goal against the Revs in his career and his sixth of the season. The most remarkable part of that stat is that he’s still logged under 500 minutes on the season and is now second on the team in goals behind Kacper Przybylko, who made it seven games without a goal.

Head coach Jim Curtin made the interesting move to sub in three attackers — Ilsinho, Andrew Wooten and Cory Burke — with the lead and also had Matt Real spell Kai Wagner. The biggest news off the bench was Burke, who showed some signs of what the Union have been missing in the past 18 months.

While Jack Elliott did a decent job filling in at the six, the Union still aren’t quite at the level they are with captain Alejandro Bedoya and Jose Martinez in the lineup but it’s also a compliment to the personnel that did play that they keep finding a way to win games no matter who is or isn’t available in the squad.
