Transfer Rumor: Union linked to Argentine goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán in strange report

Fresh off winning the Concacaf Champions League, Nahuel Guzmán has been linked to the Philadelphia Union in a strange report that also names D.C. United and NYCFC.

Guzmán will turn 35 in February and would require an international spot, something the Union has done on a number of occasions in the past with mixed results.

Colombian veteran Faryd Mondragón played two seasons for the Union in 2011-2012, Oka Nikolov had a one-year stint in 2013, Raïs M’Bolhi was a disaster with the team in 2014-2015. Andre Blake took up an international slot in his rookie season but received his green card in the summer of 2015.

English-born Matt Jones made one appearance on loan with the team in 2016 but didn’t require an international spot. Brazilian Carlos Miguel Coronel was the most recent international keeper on the team when he spent part of the 2019 season on loan from Red Bull Salzburg.

The Union currently has two keepers on the roster for 2021 in reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Andre Blake and homegrown Matt Freese. Both are likely to miss time in 2021 on international duty with the Gold Cup, World Cup qualifying and the Olympics all taking place.

Guzmán would be an intriguing player to fill that need, but any report that says the following should not be taken seriously: “the best team of the regular season wants a goalkeeper who does not fail in important matches to secure the chase for MLS Cup. Jim Curtin knows it and asked for Guzman.”
