Tense stoppage time moment leads to fines for Union and Rapids
On Tuesday, the MLS Disciplinary Committee released its decisions regarding the intense encounter between the Philadelphia Union and the Colorado Rapids on May 13. The match saw heated confrontations and various violations of league rules, resulting in fines and official warnings for both teams and several players.
Rapids forward Braian Galván was found guilty of failing to leave the field in a timely and orderly manner during the 90th minute of the match. As a consequence, Galván has been fined an undisclosed amount.
More significantly, both the Rapids and the Union were found to have violated the Mass Confrontation Policy during the 90th minute of the match. This policy, designed to discourage players and staff from engaging in confrontations, comes with specific penalties based on the number of violations.
Since this was the Union’s first violation this season, they received an official warning. However, Rapids had already violated the mass confrontation policy earlier this season, resulting in additional fines for the organization and head coach Robin Fraser. The exact amounts of these fines remain undisclosed.
Several players from both teams were also found to be at fault for inciting and/or escalating the mass confrontation. Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake and defender Damion Lowe, along with Colorado goalkeeper William Yarbrough, midfielder Bryan Acosta, and forward Diego Rubio, have all been issued undisclosed fines for their roles in the incident.
As far as the player who was at the start of this, Colorado’s Michael Barrios for his two-handed push on Blake, as of now nothing has been release for his actions.
