Union to host Bundesliga’s Eintracht Frankfurt in August friendly

Looking ahead to the summer, the Philadelphia Union have announced an international friendly with German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt. The match is set for Friday, August 2 at 5:30 p.m. ET at Subaru Park, and will serve as one of three bonus matches for Full Season Ticket Members. Tickets have already been added to STM accounts—some fans may have even noticed them pop up last week.
Frankfurt, Germany, has been one of Philadelphia’s 10 official Sister Cities since 2015, and the Union are leaning into that connection. This won’t be the first time the two clubs face off, either. The Union earned a 1-0 win when they hosted Frankfurt in a friendly back in 2018.
In the club’s official press release, Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner highlighted the significance of the relationship: “As sister cities, this match represents our ongoing commitment to collaboration and global partnership. On the field, we expect a tough, competitive match between two top-tier teams. Both sides share a dynamic, aggressive playing style and a relentless, hardworking, underdog mentality. With two of the most passionate fanbases in the game, we look forward to our fans experiencing this high-level international competition.”
The ties between the Union and Frankfurt go beyond friendlies and city partnerships. In 2019, the Union signed Mexican midfielder Marco Fabián from Frankfurt. Then, in 2022, homegrown standout Paxten Aaronson made the move to the Bundesliga club for a reported $4 million transfer fee. Aaronson is currently on loan to FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie.
Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on August 2, and tickets are available now. Expect a competitive summer showdown with some European flair in Chester.
