Shannon Grogan named head coach of Drexel women’s soccer
An associate head coach from conference rival Stony Brook will be the new leader of the Drexel women’s soccer team, the school announced on Wednesday.
Shannon Grogan, a former player and associate head coach at Stony Brook, succeeds long-time head coach Ray Goon, who retired after 29 seasons at the helm.
“Shannon brings an impressive blend of leadership, competitive vision, and student-athlete-centered values to Drexel,” Drexel University Vice President, Director of Athletics & Recreation Maisha Kelly said in a news release. “Her familiarity with the University, as well as coaching experience in the CAA, gives her a strong understanding of our competitive landscape.
Grogan grew up in Mount Holly, N.J., graduated from Holy Cross High School in Delran and played club soccer at Cherry Hill FC. In her seven seasons as a coach for Stony Brook, the Seawolves won three conference championships, appeared in three NCAA tournaments, and have made the playoffs six times.
“I am excited to bring new energy to the program and develop an environment committed to the pursuit of excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community,” Grogan said in a news release. “Drexel is deeply committed to supporting the growth of their student-athletes, and together we will build a women’s soccer program that the university community can be proud of.”
As a player at Stony Brook, Grogan was a captain for two years and helped the program capture its first America East Championship as well as its first NCAA Tournament appearance. After her collegiate career, Grogan played in the Women’s Premier Soccer League for Jersey Blues FC and Tampa Bay Hellenic. She started coaching at the club level with FC Tampa Rangers in 2016 and after returning to New York was a coach at NY Surf Soccer Club, East Meadow Soccer Club and Farmingdale SC.
Goon, who is also from Burlington County, N.J., began his tenure with the Dragons when the program was reinstated ahead of the 1997 season. He was inducted into the South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame last year.
