2016 Player Review: Keegan Rosenberry
How did the rookie sensation fare in 2016?
2016 Summary: When Keegan Rosenberry was called 3rd overall in the SuperDraft, many fans were confused. Rosenberry turned that confusion into excitement when he started shutting down the best players MLS could offer. Keegan played every single minute this year, something no rookie has ever done before. It is likely that no rookie will beat that record unless the regular season is extended in future years. Rosenberry had an absurd 13 fouls on the entire season, receiving 0 yellow cards despite playing 3060 minutes in the regular season. He took home the MLS Fair Play Award in his rookie year, started the MLS All Star game against Arsenal, and was (unjustly) the runner up to the Rookie of the Year award. Keegan contributed offensively with two goals and two assists on the year and is in the finals for the Philadelphia Union's IBX Player of the Year award.
What did he do right?: What didn't Keegan do right? He became a fan favorite in almost no time due to his hustle on the field and his soccer IQ, he started in the MLS All Star Game, he was incredible on the field.
He was able to make stops on superstars like Sebastian Giovinco, David Villa, Kaka, Steven Gerrard and Didier Drogba, and he made us all forget often that he is just a rookie. Keegan is young and has shown constant improvement, and this year he showed MLS that he can and will be a cornerstone in the Philadelphia Union defense for years to come.
What did he do wrong?: Only one thing comes to mind when I think of times where things didn't work out for Keegan Rosenberry, and to me, that would be his "own goal" against Orlando City in the second to last game of the season. It was the only blemish of his season, and while it was originally called an own goal, it was later given to Orlando City forward Carlos Rivera as a regular goal. Keegan's defending just wasn't enough for this goal, and was his lowest point of the season (which really is saying a lot).
Most Memorable Moment: Of all the Keegan moments this year, to me his first career goal against the star studded LA Galaxy was when fans realized he was the real deal when it comes to the back line.
While it was a tap in, it was a huge goal for the team as the Union have historically struggled to come up with results against the Galaxy.
