Philadelphia Union Academy goalkeeper Matthew Freese was named the All-Delco Boys Soccer Player of the Year by the Delaware County Daily Times for his play at Episcopal Academy this fall.

Freese joined the Union Academy over the summer, and despite being offered the starting job on the U18 team after C.J. dos Santos signed with Benfica in Portugal, decided to return for his senior season at Episcopal.

While playing high school soccer, Freese continued to train with the Academy, Bethlehem Steel FC, as well as having a chance to train with the first team in October.

He made his debut for the Union Academy U18s in a 3-1 win over Sporting Kansas City at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase in Florida on December 2.

The 6-foot-3 keeper who is committed to play at Harvard next fall appeared in 16 games for the Churchmen, eight of those clean sheets for a defense that conceded just 17 goals in 20 games. He also played in the field and scored a goal against the Haverford School in the team’s regular season finale.
