Union Academy teams struggle against visitors from New England
U18 team shut out twice; U16s split games against New England Revolution and Boston Bolts
Shut out by two opponents from New England over the weekend, the Philadelphia Union Academy U18 team has lost hold of not only the top spot in the league standings but also in their own division.
The U18s played to a frustrating scoreless draw at YSC Sports on Saturday against FC Boston Bolts and followed it up with a 1-0 loss to New England Revolution on Sunday at Power Training Complex. The lone goal in the two matches was scored by 16-year-old Revolution forward Timothy Ennin in the 51st minute on Sunday.
Jahmali Waite recorded the clean sheet on Saturday, his fifth of the season and Emmanuel Perez made his first appearance since October as a second half substitute, but beyond that there isn’t a lot to draw from the game reports from the two-game set.
After sitting in first place in the Atlantic Division and No. 1 overall, the U18s have only two wins in their last five matches. Their record of 15-4-2 is identical to first place New York Red Bulls with a Saturday match-up at Power Training Complex looming.
U16
The U16s followed up a 3-0 win over FC Boston Bolts on Saturday with a 1-0 loss to New England Revolution on Sunday.
Defender Andrew Taber scored the eventual game winner off a corner kick in the 20th minute, his first of the season, and Liam O’Brien and Aziz Saidi each added goals while Eoin Gawronski recorded his second clean sheet of the season at YSC Sports on Saturday.
Michael Tsicoulias scored the only goal on Sunday in the third minute of New England’s 1-0 win at Power Training Complex on Sunday.
With the weekend split, the U16s remained in fourth place in the Atlantic Division, eight points behind division leaders Baltimore Armour with two games in hand.
U14
Aboubacar Camara’s 20th of the season held up as the winner in a 4-0 win over New York Cosmos at YSC Sports on Saturday.
Selmir Miscic added a brace and Zephyn Brockert-Kress scored his first of the season.
U13
Joseph DiMaggio scored the lone goal in the 32nd minute to give the New York Cosmos a 1-0 win over the Union U13s on Saturday at YSC Sports.
U12
The U12s swept TSF Academy for the fourth time this season with 4-1 and 7-0 wins. Timothy Madden had a hat trick and Ian Abbey added a goal in the first game while Beckham Aiman had a hat trick, Marcello Mazzola a brace and Conrad Bracy and Julian Pittaoulis added goals in the second game.
Madden and Mazzola are tied for second on the team in goals with 26. Nelson Pierre leads the team with 34.
