Philadelphia Union Academy teams go unbeaten in games against D.C. United & Loudoun SC

Jeremy Rafanello scored a pair of goals in the second half and the defense held D.C. United in check until conceding a late goal in a 2-1 win for the Philadelphia Union U19s in Upper Marlboro, Maryland last weekend.

The win was the only victory for the visiting Philadelphia Union Academy in a triple header of games against the MLS academy rival. The U17 and U15 games both ended in 2-2 draws.

The U19s won their fourth straight game to start the season thanks to Rafanello’s fifth and sixth goals of the season and his third game-winner. Tomas Romero had his second start of the season in goal, just missing out on a clean sheet when Jonathan Godette scored in the 90th minute.

The U17s, meanwhile, twice blew a one-goal lead with Julian Anderson’s 24th opener being canceled out by a 40th minute Kyle Davis goal and Jason Aoyama’s 53rd minute strike giving way to an Iker Bustamante equalizer for D.C.

The goals were the first of the league campaign for both Anderson, who converted a penalty kick in the first leg of the Generation adidas Cup qualifiers and Aoyama, who had two goals in GA Cup play the previous weekend. The U17s remain unbeaten on the season at 2-0-3.

The U15s needed a late comeback in the second half to steal a point.

D.C. United took a 2-0 lead on goals from Thomas McDermott in the 22nd minute and Brian Frenz in the 47th but defender Eskow Asomaning pulled a goal back in the 65th minute and Dante Huckaby bagged a late equalizer. The draw was the second of the season for the team, which improved to 3-1-2 on the season.

The U14 and U13 teams played were in a different part of the D.C. metro area with games against Loudoun SC in Leesburg.

The U14s drew 1-1 with a 61st equalizer from Marcelo Mazzola after conceding a penalty kick in the 10th minute to Xavier O’Neil. The goal was the first for Mazzola in his second straight game playing up an age group with the U14s. He has five goals in three games for the U13s.

Dominic Wilson had a brace and Jordi Guifarro and Rafi Sanjuan each had a goal in the U13s 4-0 win over Loudoun SC.

The Union Academy teams return home this Saturday with games against PA Classics. The U15s play at 11 a.m., following by the U12s at Noon, the U17s at 1 p.m., the U12s at 1:30 p.m. and the U19s at 3 p.m.

The U13 and U14 teams have the weekend off ahead of a trip to North Carolina, where the U13s play New York City FC and Concorde Fire and the U14s play New York City FC, North Carolina FC and Atlanta United.
