Philadelphia Union Decline Second Year Option On Midfielder Toni Stahl

Yesterday the Philadelphia Union added three new faces to the team through the draft and today chose not to bring back one of of them that it added in last year’s MLS draft. Toni Stahl, last year’s second round draft pick, had his option declined by the Union today.

Drafted one spot before New York Red Bulls star center back Tim Ream, Stahl never lived up to the expectations he had coming out of college. Taken 17th overall in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, the University of Connecticut star midfielder was deemed a disappointment at center back for the Union. In his only regular season game for the Union he was red carded in the 41st minute and did not appear again during the MLS season. A two-legged lunge on then Seattle Sounder midfielder Freddie Ljungberg gave the (then) 24-year-old Stahl his second yellow, and a red, of the game.

His only other appearances for the Union came in an USOC game and various friendlies, including those against Celtic and Manchester United. The Finnish national made $110,300 in total compensation in 2010.
