Bedoya scores, grabs live mic to call on Congress to ‘end gun violence now’

After scoring in the third minute of tonight’s match against D.C. United, the Union’s Alejandro Bedoya picked up a field microphone and delivered a message to the national TV audience: “Congress, end gun violence now. Do something, let’s go!”

Bedoya’s comments come just hours after mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, which left 20 and 9 people dead, respectively. Both shooters used assault rifles acquired legally. Prior to the shooting in El Paso, the shooter penned a white supremacist manifesto in which he attributes the attack to “the Hispanic invasion of Texas.”

This is hardly the first time Bedoya has spoken out against gun violence. In March of last year, he wore an “MSD Strong” shirt under his jersey, in response to the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school where a 19-year-old man murdered 17 and wounded 17 more with an assault rifle.
