Former East Stroudsburg captain and coach Shaq Stephenson has been named as the ninth head coach of Delaware Valley University’s men’s soccer team.

The St. Ann, Jamaica native, who has been working as an assistant at his alma mater, was announced as the new head coach on Wednesday. Stephenson has also coached at Lehigh Valley United and Nazareth SC and lives in Philadelphia.

“When I arrived on campus, I knew this is exactly where I wanted to be,” Stephenson stated in a news release. “I’m looking forward to serving the student athletes of DelVal, and to building on the history of the program. Nil sine magno labore.”

Stephenson succeeds Chris Zirpoli, who announced his resignation in January after a six-year stint.

As a player, Stephenson made 66 appearances with 47 starts over four years at ESU and served as a captain his senior year. He’s been working there under veteran head coach Rob Berkowitz. The Warriors earned PSAC Tournament berths three times while posting a 35-30-9 record over the past four seasons.
