A West Chester native who starred as a player at Penn State and has served as the top assistant coach at Villanova and West Chester University is the new head coach Drexel men’s soccer.

Mark Fetrow was announced Drexel’s seventh head coach last week. He will succeed Michael Marchiano, who stepped down from the post last month.

“Through the commitment of honesty and integrity, our staff will focus on developing well-rounded student athletes while maximizing their potential on the field, in the classroom, and serving the Philadelphia community,” Fetrow stated in a news release. “I am excited to work with our current players, foster relationships with Drexel alumni, and collaborate with faculty and staff to continue a legacy of triumph and growth.”

A former standout in his youth soccer days at FC Delco and West Chester Henderson High School, Fetrow played at Penn State and was drafted by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the 2011 supplemental draft. He went on to help lead West Chester United to their first national title – the 2015 Werner Fricker Cup. He started his coaching career as a grad assistant at Penn State and was the top assistant at West Chester University before joining the Villanova staff in 2016.

“His success in coaching throughout the region and building competitive rosters is evident,” Director of Athletics Maisha Kelly stated in a news release. “Mark is committed to developing talented soccer players and preparing student-athletes for success in their academic pursuits and as individuals within their communities. We look forward to Mark starting his next chapter in West Philadelphia as he builds off the recent accomplishments of our men’s soccer program.”
