Saint Joseph’s grad Tim Mulqueen is returning to Hawk Hill to take over as men’s soccer head coach.

The former Memphis 901 FC head coach and long-time MLS and international assistant succeeds Don D’Ambra, who led the program for 15 seasons. The school and D’Ambra “mutually agreed to part ways” in early November.

“We have found the perfect leader for our men’s soccer program in St. Joe’s Men’s Soccer Hall of Famer Tim Mulqueen,” Director of Athletics Jill Bodensteiner said in a news release. “Tim is the full package – he is a leader who understands the importance of establishing a great culture; he has a wealth of soccer experience at every level; and his love for his alma mater will inspire past, current, and future Hawks.”

Mulqueen has coached some of the biggest names in U.S. soccer history as a member of the United States Soccer Federation and U.S. National Team, including Tim Howard, who he met when he was a 12-year-old at a goalkeeper clinic he was running along with goalkeepers Brad Guzan and Tony Meola.

“I am ecstatic to be back at Saint Joseph’s to lead the men’s soccer program. I am grateful to Jill Bodensteiner for giving me this opportunity to return to Hawk Hill, to the university that I owe my career to and the program that I deeply love,” said Mulqueen in a news release. “Under the leadership of Jill and Ken Krimmel and with the support of alumni, I believe we can reignite a winning program that makes our community proud.”

Mulqueen becomes the fifth head coach in program history dating back to 1958. Jack Dunn, Jack Ruggero, Tom Turner preceded D’Ambra.

Mulqueen served as an assistant coach of the 2008 United States Men’s Olympic Soccer team in Beijing and was also an assistant coach for the 2005 and 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup and the 2007 and 2009 U20 World Cups. Among his responsibilities with the United States Soccer Federation, Mulqueen planned daily training sessions, was responsible for identifying potential National Team players and developing a database of scouts and players nationally. Additionally, he was responsible for video analysis of opponents and self-scouting for U-17, U-20, and Olympic teams.

To go with his international experience, Mulqueen brings extensive coaching in professional soccer, most recently as the inaugural head coach of Memphis 901 FC of the USL Championship. Along with hiring a staff, managing the roster, scouting and player development, Mulqueen was proactive in numerous community outreach programs and events.

Mulqueen began his professional career in 1996 as an assistant coach with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, before taking a similar position with the Kansas City Wizards from 2000 through 2005. During that time, Mulqueen and the Wizards won the MLS Cup in 2000 and the 2004 US Open Cup. He returned to the sidelines as an assistant coach with Orlando City SC in 2017 before being named head coach at Memphis 901 FC. Mulqueen began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Rutgers from 1988-94. During his time at Rutgers, Mulqueen went to the 1989, 1990, and 1994 NCAA Final Fours. He served as an assistant coach at Lafayette in 1995.

Coming to Hawk Hill as a student-athlete in 1983, the Fords, New Jersey native earned team MVP twice, and ranks among St. Joe’s all-time top-10 in saves, goals against average, and shutouts. Mulqueen, who was inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Men’s Soccer Hall of Fame in 2017, played professionally from 1988-97 for the New Jersey Eagles, Penn-Jersey Spirit and New York/New Jersey MetroStars.
