Bradley Carnell joins Philadelphia Union as fourth head coach in club history
Just like most of us rang in the new year watching a ball drop in Times Square, the Philadelphia Union started 2025 with a major announcement. On Thursday, January 2nd, the club ushered in a new era by naming Bradley Carnell as their new head coach, making him the Union’s fourth manager in club history.
Carnell, a Johannesburg native, most recently managed St. Louis City SC, where he led the expansion team to an impressive 2023 Western Conference Championship with a record of 17-12-3.
Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner praised Carnell’s tactical vision, stating, “Bradley has the attributes we were looking for in a manager… His approach emphasizes a high-press style of play while organizing a structured defense.” Tanner also highlighted Carnell’s alignment with the club’s player development philosophy, adding, “We are confident he will bring a clear sporting philosophy that elevates the team and delivers a competitive season.”
Carnell shared his excitement about the opportunity, saying, “Philadelphia is an amazing city, built on communities of hardworking and passionate people who truly love their soccer. I am excited for this opportunity to build upon an already solid foundation.”
Before leading City SC, Carnell served as an assistant manager and interim head coach with the New York Red Bulls. During his interim stint in 2020, he guided the team to a 6-3-5 record in 14 matches, securing New York’s 11th consecutive postseason appearance. As an assistant he helped guide in its 2018 Supporters Shield run.
He started coaching in South Africa as the head coach at the University of Johannesburg in 2012. Carnell would also have stops at the Free State Stars and the Orlando Pirates before joining the Red Bulls.
