Union II pick up point in scoreless draw with Revs II to open season

Andrew Rick saved a penalty in the 89th minute to preserve a point for the Philadelphia Union II in their 2025 season opener in Foxborough on Sunday afternoon.
Union II outshot the hosts 17-5 in the match but were not able to find a breakthrough in their first conference game as defending Eastern Conference champions. They did, it’s worth noting, fared better than last year’s champions North Texas SC, which lost 3-0 to start their season.
Former captain and new head coach Ryan Richter’s first game in charge of the second team – he was a first team assistant the past three seasons and prior to that an academy head coach – featured a starting XI with nine players on first team contracts. That included Nathan Harriel on a rehab assignment. The right back was injured early in the preseason and is working his way back to match fitness. Amateur Gavin Wetzel and new signing Stas Korzeniowski were the lone non-first team rostered players in the starting lineup.
Cavan Sullivan led the way on the day with six shots, Olney had four and Vazquez registered four key passes. Rick made a pair of saves to secure the clean sheet, his eighth for Union II in 37 starts.
After the scoreless draw, New England was able to grab the extra point with a shootout victory. Union II return home for their home opener against New York Red Bulls II next Monday night at 7 p.m.
