Union II concede late equalizer but pick up extra point in shootout

It looked like Philadelphia Union II were headed to their first win of the 2025 campaign when Pittsburgh native Tanner Rosborough finally got the offside flag to stay down and scored a 90th minute equalizer for the visiting New York Red Bulls II on Monday night at Subaru Park.
Rosborough’s efforts weren’t enough to earn the visitors more than just the point as his missed penalty kick sealed a shootout win for the hosts. Goalkeeper Andrew Rick made two big stops in the shootout to make it three points through their first two matches.
Cavan Sullivan had the lone goal of the game for the hosts on a 20th minute free kick and it looked like it might be enough despite several big chances created by Red Bull II, including a stunning miss on a perfectly placed cross and some chances whistled for offside. The momentum shifted even more to Red Bull II’s favor when Gavin Wetzel was sent off for a DOGSO in the 82nd minute but despite the disappointment of not getting the three points Ryan Richter and company were happy to celebrate the two after going down a man the last 8 minutes plus stoppage time.
With Neil Pierre out on international duty, Ramzi Qawasmy earned his first Union II start and academy midfielder Zach Mastrodimos also slotted into the starting XI for the first time. Academy defender Jordan Griffin and defender Óscar Benítez both made their Union II debuts off the bench.
