As the clock ticked towards kickoff at the Union vs. New York Red Bulls U.S. Open Cup game last night, a darkening sky hinted at the storm brewing on the horizon, leaving many fans to constantly check the radar.

Fans gathered, anticipation building, as the players took the field for the national anthem. Yet, just moments after the final notes faded, the stadium announced that there was severe weather coming, delaying the highly anticipated match.

Fans were instructed to leave their open seats and stay inside the stadium to avoid any harm.

Within minutes, the rain intensified, lightning lit up the sky, and the field slowly transformed into a lake. As waves formed on the pitch, the stadium announcer informed the crowd that updates would be provided by 8:45 p.m..

While some fans left the stadium, many chose to wander around causing a difficult flow of traffic. Despite the chaos, the Sons of Ben continued their chants by the players’ tunnel. As the storm raged on, it became clear that the game would not resume that night.

As the clock struck 8:45, the stadium announced the match would be postponed to Wednesday, August 13. The U.S. Open Cup semifinal match will take place on September 16, with the winner of this match facing Nashville SC.

The Union released a statement last night that tickets will be honored for the August 13 match, as well as parking. Fans are asked to keep their parking receipts as proof of payment.

The Philadelphia Union will face off against the New York Red Bulls in an MLS regular season match on Saturday, July 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Subaru Park.
