Carnell: Westfield ‘day-to-day’ after hip injury in New England
Philadelphia Union fullback Frankie Westfield has avoided serious injury, according to head coach Bradley Carnell, after a crunching tackle forced him out of Saturday night’s game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.
“Good, but not so good,” Carnell said when asked about Westfield on Monday. “All the X rays, and everything came out negative in terms of anything structurally wrong with his hips. So it’s a very bad confusion on the hip pointer, and he’s probably day-to-day.”
Westfield exited the match just before the half hour mark after a hit from Griffin Yow near the sideline. He was replaced in the 31st minute by Olivier Mbaizo, who made his first appearance in MLS for the season.
Westfield, 20, has been a stalwart on the Union back line that past two seasons and is tied with Nathan Harriel for second on the team in MLS assists this season with two and tied for second with Jovan Lukic in key passes with 13. The Philadelphia native has 45 appearance and logged more than 3,100 minutes in all competitions over the past two seasons, which is 7th all-time for a Union player signed to a homegrown contract.
The Philadelphia Union visit Orlando City on Wednesday and return home to Subaru Park to face Columbus Crew on Saturday night.
