Two goals in two minutes of second-half stoppage time transformed what looked like a devastating home defeat into an unforgettable 3-2 victory for the Philadelphia Union over Atlanta United FC. Trailing with just minutes to go, the Union engineered an improbable two-goal comeback to claim a sensational 3-2 victory.

Niel Pierre banged home the equalizer off a Kai Wagner assist in the sixth minute of second half stoppage time.  Pierre’s magic was followed quickly by Ezekiel Alladoh’s brilliance. Alladoh stunned with a left footed volley from inside the box that sailed into the left corner of the net. The club’s record signing entered the match with just two shots on target. He left a hero and in doing so sends a shockwave of joy to keep the wave going in the right direction for Philadelphia.

The dramatic win keeps Interim Head Coach Ryan Richter’s unblemished record intact, marking three straight victories to resume the MLS season, all on home soil. More importantly, instead of sliding back to the bottom of the Eastern Conference table behind Atlanta, the Union continue their slow climb from the depths of disappointment.

The match opened with a bit of a shocker when Atlanta was reduced to ten men early on thanks to Enea Mihaj’s late,  high studded challenge on Milan Iloski. But, the Union continued to showcase their confusing tendency to struggle when up a man.

In the 30th minute, despite playing a man down, Atlanta struck first. Sloppy defense and poor footing proved costly as Nathan Harriel whiffed on a contested pass, allowing Miguel Almirón to use his speed to slip past Frankie Westfield and Niel Pierre. Pierre managed to attempt to close down Almiron inside the six yard box, but his challenge failed to fully block the effort and the ball rolled harmlessly by the oncoming Andre Blake for the opening goal.

Atlanta then doubled their lead against the run of play in the 66th minute when Tristan Muyumba pounced on a failed clearance, and a failed challenge by second half substitute Jesus Bueno, curling a strike past Blake.

For the vast majority of the night, it felt as though the soccer gods were actively conspiring against Philadelphia. The Union dominated set pieces, earning over a dozen corner kicks, but saw multiple attempts rattle off the crossbar. When the frame of the goal wasn’t denying them, Atlanta goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos was standing on his head, making four critical saves.

Even after Iloski pulled one back in the 73rd minute—setting a new club record by scoring in his sixth consecutive and notching his 10th of the season—time seemed to be running out on the Union’s siege. Iloski has now scored eight goals in his last 10 matches.

With Atlanta parking the bus and clinging to a 2-1 lead, the match entered second-half stoppage time, setting the stage for total chaos.

In the 90+5th minute, the Union found life. Off a desperate late push, Union homegrown defender and MLS rookie Pierre utilized his height once again to pound home a headed goal off a Wagner cross.

Before Atlanta could even blink, Philadelphia struck the knockout blow two minutes later in the 90+7th minute.

A perfectly placed cross floated into the box toward Ezekiel Alladoh off the coveted feet of Wagner. The Union’s club-record signing proceeded to re-introduce himself to the home crowd in unforgettable fashion. With a defender on his back, Alladoh leaned back and unleashed a first-touch volley straight into the back of the net. Wagner now has three assists in his first three matches back with the Union, providing the immediate spark they crucially needed.

From the brink of a frustrating home loss to last-place Atlanta, the Union walked away with all three points in unforgettable style. Richter’s side showed resilience to turn an agonizing night into a galvanizing victory as they continue their mid-season resurgence.
