Philadelphia Union sign Aaron Jones

Per a press release, the Philadelphia Union have officially signed 2017 MLS SuperDraft pick Aaron Jones. The defender now joins Marcus Epps as the second Union signing from this year’s draft. Jones played two years at Georgia State University before transferring to Clemson for the second half of his collegiate career. At Clemson he made 35 starts and caught the Union’s eye at the 33rd overall pick.

In an interview with Kyle Kepner from Indomitable City Soccer, Jones said that he “has some stiff competition at the Union for the right back spot.” When asked about expectations for this year, Jones said that he is looking forward to competing with Keegan Rosenberry this season, explaining “That’s something that I’m relishing. I look at the success that Keegan had this year, and that’s what I’m hungry for next year. I want to push Keegan for his spot and hit the ground running, I’m excited.”

Jim Curtin has talked a lot about the importance of fielding a deep team, with the goal being competition at every position. The Union are much deeper than in years past, which should keep the team sharp throughout the long MLS season. Creating an environment where players are constantly pushing each other to become better can only improve the development of this relatively young Union side.
