Raul ‘Chino’ Gonzalez trialing with Philadelphia Union
Cut by Minnesota United FC, former University of Memphis star is getting a look from the Union
A former University of Memphis standout cut by Minnesota United FC after spending much of preseason with the expansion club is getting a look by the Philadelphia Union organization, according to a report from his hometown newspaper.
Patrick Ochs of the SunHerald reported Wednesday that Raul “Chino” Gonzalez trained on Tuesday with Bethlehem Steel FC and was expected to train with the first team for the rest of the week.
The Ocean Springs, Mississippi native played four seasons at Memphis, scoring 13 goals and dishing out 13 assists in 65 appearances but had his senior season cut short because of injury after 12 games and went undrafted. He had a goal in eight games for the Des Moines Menace in the Premier Development League last summer.
After being cut by Minnesota, Gonzalez joined up with USL club Richmond Kickers, where he was preparing to sign a contract when the Union came calling.
A winger and a forward in college, he spent time as an attacking midfielder with Minnesota and has played right back for Richmond.
If he signs on with the Union organization, Gonzalez would be the second player in the club from Mississippi. Rookie midfielder Marcus Epps is from Jackson. Ochs, the SunHerald reporter, tweeted out a photo on Wednesday from when they played against each other in high school.
