Bedoya captains USMNT in Gold Cup opener
Bedoya has now served as captain for both club and country.
Philadelphia Union captain Alejandro Bedoya brandished another armband today: that of the United States Men’s National Team. In their Gold Cup-opening draw against Panama, the 30-year-old served as captain of the USMNT for the first time in his international career.
With 62 appearances, Bedoya is the most-capped player on a Gold Cup roster that is admittedly missing several key players – including Michael Bradley (who regularly wears the armband for the US).
The United States drew Panama, 1-1 in their first game of group play on Saturday night. Bedoya went 85 minutes before being subbed out for Jordan Morris as head coach Bruce Arena pushed for a late winner.
In the second of the three group stage matches, Bedoya and the United States will be in action again on Wednesday, July 12 at 9:00 PM when they will take on Martinique in Tampa, Florida. They’ll round out the group stage against Nicaragua in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, July 15 at 7:00 PM.
