Medunjanin gets camp invite ahead of Bosnia & Herzegovina’s U.S. matches

The Philadelphia Union’s 32-year-old Bosnian midfielder Haris Medunjanin received a call-up to the Bosnia and Herzegovina squad ahead of two international friendlies in the U.S. later this month.

Medunjanin currently has 56 appearances for his national team dating back to his debut in 2009. He was last called up for World Cup Qualifiers in October 2017, against Belgium and Estonia. He started as a central attacking midfielder in both games and scored against Belgium for his ninth international goal.

Bosnia and Herzegovina will take on the United States in Carson, California on Sunday, January 28th, followed by a match against Mexico in San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday, January 31st. The United States game could prove interesting as Union teammate CJ Sapong received a call-up from the United States and could face off against Haris.

It will also be the first chance for Haris to play under new national team coach Robert Prosinecki, who took over for Mehmed Bazdarevic after the team failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and the World Cup finals in Russia this summer.

“It is always a pleasure to play for your country, especially when you get to play against the United States,” Medunjanin said in a news release. “The fact that Bosnia is looking at MLS shows that they appreciate the league because of its high level of soccer here in North America.”

In a recent interview on the Union website, Haris talked about how he was excited to rejoin the Union and told the fans to expect better in 2018.

“I am very excited to be back to play for the Union because it was a nice atmosphere at the stadium last year,” he said. “I want to tell fans to be patient, that we are going to be better than last year and compete for a playoff spot in 2018.”
