It was an unlikely ending of a game that needed an unlikely hero and former Drexel and West Chester United star Chris Donovan was just the guy to do it.

His goal deep into stoppage time off a cross from Kai Wagner (and a nice helper from Joaquin Torres) gave the Philadelphia Union a 2-1 win over Querétaro FC and set up a much-anticipated semifinal showdown against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami set for Tuesday night at Subaru Park.

Donovan and company had to wait out VAR to officially celebrate the winner and Querétaro had a few last ditch attempts to send the game to penalties but it’s really hard to write a better story than that unfolded. Unheralded and often maligned by fans as he’s adjusted to MLS play in a very limited role, Donovan is the hero tonight and will go down as the guy who brought Messi to town.
