A 60th minute goal from Haley Gschrey held up as the winner on a historic day for La Salle women’s head coach Paul Royal, who collected win No. 200 in the 1-0 road win over the University of Albany on Sunday.

Royal is coaching his 21st season with the Explorers and now owns a career record of 200-154-37. He’s the 83rd active Division I head coach to win 200 matches and only the 26th active D-I head coach to accomplish the feat while working at only one school in his or her entire career.

The Explorers have made the NCAA tournament five times with him at the helm and he’s posted 10 seasons with double-digit wins and 12 seasons with a winning record. Royal is a four-time Atlantic 10 coach of the year honoree.

Sunday’s win followed a 2-1 home loss to Towson to start the season last Thursday.

“It’s super exciting that we were able to get Paul’s 200th win today against Albany. It wasn’t the most beautiful game but we fought hard to the end,” grad student Emily Banashefski said in the post-game interview. “It feels great to do this on an away trip and we’re just happy to get the first win of the season.”
