The Philadelphia Union will open the 2024 campaign against a familiar international foe.

The Union learned Wednesday night that they will open the Concacaf Champions Cup against Costa Rican team Deportivo Saprissa. The two teams will face off in early February for the first of two legs in Round One of the newly fashioned Champions League.

The Union traveled to Costa Rica for their first Champions League campaign in 2021 and defeated the Costa Rican side 1-0 in an empty Estadio Ricardo Saprissa. The advanced 5-0 on aggregate after a 4-0 win at Subaru Park and then continued to the semifinals with a 4-1 aggregate win over Atlanta United.

The Champions Cup will be the Union’s third Concacaf campaign.

They advanced to the semifinals in 2021 and in 2023, falling to Club America in 2021 and LAFC in 2023. They defeated El Salvador club Alianza FC and Mexican side Atlas FC en route to the semifinals.
