Women’s College Soccer Notebook: Kurian can’t stop scoring, Jefferson perfect, Messiah surging & more
Misericordia has cooled of late with a loss to Messiah and a scoreless draw at Scranton but the Cougars remain the highest ranked local women’s college program heading into late September.
Misericordia checked in at No. 6 in this week’s poll, followed by Messiah at No. 9. Kutztown is No. 8 in the Division II poll while Wilmington University received votes. Swarthmore, Rowan and Scranton also received votes.
Though they aren’t in the national poll, LVC women have had an impressive run of late with four straight wins, including a 1-0 win at Eastern that was the Eagles first loss of the season. After being outscored 5-1 in three losses to start the season the Dutchwomen have outscored opponents 5-1.
First-year goalkeeper Camryn Porter (Dillsburg, Pa.) has starred for LVC with three straight clean sheets.
Jefferson Perfect
Jefferson women are a perfect 6-0-0 (3-0-0 in conference play) to start the season and have outscored opponents 20-0. Junior Nikki Dedes (Medford, N.J.) leads the attack with 4 goals but 12 other players have at least one goal on the year so far. Dillan Sorino (Pennsauken, N.J.) has three goals and three assists.
Delaware Turning Things Around
The Blue Hens didn’t have the start they were looking for but after going winless in their first five against challenging opponents in West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Bucknell, Liberty and La Salle they have stretched an unbeaten streak to four. They’ve outscored opponents 8-2 over that run. On the year, head coach Kelly Lawrence has gotten goal contributions from 12 different players – 4 players have two goals a piece and 3 have a pair of assists, including first-year Gabby Riley (Middletown, Del.).
Kurian Making an Impact
Megan Kurian (Royersford, Pa.) has made a big impact already at the college level with 11 goals and 8 assists through her first 9 games. She has seven goals and three assists just in her last three games and is in the top 6 both in goals and assists in the nation. Her teammate, senior Cassie Johnson (Richland, Pa.) is also on the national scoring charts in a tie with Kuran and others for the most assists (8). Penn College is third in the nation in scoring offense at 4.22 goals per game.
Kurian isn’t the only first-year player from the area making a noticeable impact offensively. Kaleigh Evans (Flourtown, Pa.) has eight goals and an assist in her first 8 college games for Ursinus.
