Six double-digit seeds pulled off first round upsets in the NJSIAA South Jersey playoffs earlier this week and four of those teams were from two schools: GCIT and Barnegat.

GCIT boys defeated Lenape 1-0 as a 12 seed while their girls – also a 12 seed – defeated Cherokee 2-1. Barnegat’s 12th-seeded boys team upset 5 seed Collingswood with a 6-0 win and their girls – an 11th seed – knocked out Pleasantville with a 5-0 win.

Two other double digit seeds – 15th seeded Cherry Hil West boys and 11 seed Lindenwold boys – also pulled off first round upsets.

The girls tournament continues today with second round matches while the boys play the second round games tomorrow.

Girls semifinals are Monday and the finals are Thursday of next week while the boys play Tuesday and Friday.

Boys top seeds Schalick, West Deptford, Shawnee and Washington Township all cruised to lopsided victories in their opening round games with scorelines of 7-0, 5-0, 5-0 and 6-0. Top girls seeds Audubon and West Deptford both had first round byes while Southern had a tough 1-0 win over Vineland in Group 4 and Shawnee beat Cumberland 7-0.

Cinnaminson and Delran are both part of the Central Jersey playoffs now and the two schools saw all four of their teams advance out of the first round.
