Penn earns sixth seed, will host second round NCAA match on Sunday
Penn’s disappointment losing the Ivy League final at Rhodes Field on Sunday didn’t last long. On Monday, the Quakers (14-3-1) were awarded an at-large bid, a first round bye and hosting privilege for the second round of the NCAA Championship tournament as the sixth overall seed.
Penn will host the winner of the first round match between UMass and Evansville in Sunday’s second round at 5 p.m. at Rhodes Field. UMass hosts Evansville on Thursday at 1 p.m. in Amherst, Mass.
A win Sunday for Penn would mean a meeting with either Virginia or their Sunday opponent, West Virginia or North Florida.
Penn is making its 12th appearance in the NCAA Championship and its second in the last three years. Two years ago, the Quakers advanced to the second round with a 3-0 win over Rutgers at Penn Park before falling in overtime on the road to eventual national champion Syracuse, 2-1.
