Scranton, Messiah and Misericordia advance to Sweet 16

Scranton women’s soccer will host games this weekend with a trip to Las Vegas on the line while Messiah heads to St. Louis and Misericordia to Newport News two wins away from the Final Four.

Scranton (19-1-2) defeated Wesleyan 2-0 on Sunday after opening tournament play with a 3-1 win over Marywood. They’ll host Trinity (Texas) at 3 p.m. this Saturday at Weiss Field and will host the winner of their game and Washington & Lee vs William Smith in the quarterfinal on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Hannah Adair (Manheim, Pa.) scored in the 89th minute to lead Messiah (18-1-3) to a 1-0 win over Case Western Reserve University on Sunday afternoon. Mia Libby had a brace and four other teammates scored in a 6-1 opening round win over Gordon College. The sectional semifinal appearance will be the Falcon’s 22nd. They’ve won 17 sectional finals and six national titles. They’ll travel to St. Louis to play University of Chicago on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Misericordia (18-1-2) will head to Newport News and face Christopher Newport for the first time in program history on Saturday at 11 a.m. They beat Ithaca 3-1 on Sunday after posting the same score line against Grove City on Saturday. Leading goal scorer Emma Sweitzer (Dallas, Pa.) had a goal in each game to lead the Cougars. Misericordia has made the Sweet 16 now three of the last four seasons, reaching the Elite 8 in 2022.
