The Philadelphia Union kicked off the 2025 season with a 4-2 win over Orlando City on Saturday night in what could be considered a statement to start the season.

Tai Baribo had a brace and Mikael Uhre and Daniel Gazdag added goals in the come-from-behind victory that demonstrated how overcooked some of the offseason rhetoric – and in-game commentary – was about the Union. When 8 of 11 starters are returners and only one of the three debutants weren’t part of the organization in 2024 it’s not exactly an overhauled team that was promised.

Head coach Bradley Carnell did roll the dice giving Frankie Westfield the start over veteran right back Olivier Mbaizo and Olwethu Makhanya’s first MLS appearance had plenty of question marks but the core of the team – and the majority of the weapons that helped the team find the back of the net 62 times last season – is still very much intact. The Red Bull tactics are a bit finer and the team does appear to be less predictable and stale but some of the same joys and concerns about the team last year have overlapped into 2025 with the promise of a new designated player and U.S. international still to come.

It’s not exactly a 180 but the positive glass half-full vibes from Carnell on down and the response on the field from the players to a barrage of Negadelphia offseason vibes was something to behold.
