Russell Naylor, a former Penn State soccer player who owned semi-pro team the Philadelphia Freedom in the mid-’90s recently died of cancer at the age of 84.

Naylor starred in high school at New Hope-Solebury and went on to play at Penn State during the 1960 season. He brought lower level league soccer to the Philadelphia area in 1994 with the launch of the Philadelphia Freedom, which lasted four seasons before disbanding in 1997 but helped eventually pave the way for the city finally getting a top flight team with the Philadelphia Union entering MLS in 2010.

Naylor was also involved with FC Delco and Providence Soccer.

Memorial Services for Naylor will take place at Paoli Presbyterian Church in Paoli, Pennsylvania, on April 11, 2025, at 11:30 am.
