Delaware native Anthony Fontana was the man of the hour in Colorado Wednesday night, scoring the game-winning goal for the Switchbacks in their 3-2 extra time win over One Knoxville in the U.S. Open Cup.

The goal was a first for Fontana since joining Colorado Springs. The Newark native also had an assist on the 81st minute goal from Marco Micaletto. The Open Cup goal was the third of Fontana’s career. He scored for the Philadelphia Union in the 2018 cup against Richmond Kickers and the 2019 cup against DC United in extra time.

Former Union teammate Matthew Real started in the match for the Switchbacks, who are coached by former Bethlehem Steel captain James Chambers. Former Steel players Matt Mahoney and Zach Zandi also started for the Switchbacks.

The Doctor is In for Charleston

MD Myers (Delran, N.J.) had himself a night for Charleston Battery in their third round match against USL League One side South Georgia Tormenta with a goal in first half stoppage time and two second half strikes for the hat trick in a 4-0 win. The Philadelphia Union Academy grad now has six U.S. Open Cup goals to his name.

Heartbreak for Shakes

Kris Shakes got the start for New Mexico United in their Open Cup tie with El Paso Locomotive but the game ended in heart break for the Philadelphia Union Academy grad with Wilmer Cabrera Jr. scoring an equalizer in the 97th minute and a penalty shootout loss. The game and shootout had the potential to be a Union Academy goalkeeper showdown but Sebastián Mora-Mora got the start in place of regular starter Jahmali Waite.
